Lesson 1: Be Specific — Vague prompts get vague answers
The #1 mistake people make is being too vague. Every extra word of clarity you add saves 3x more words in back-and-forth corrections. Tell the AI exactly what you want: topic, length, tone, audience.
❌ Weak prompt
Write something about social media marketing.
✅ Strong prompt
Write a 200-word LinkedIn post on how small businesses can grow followers organically in 2025. Tone: practical, no jargon. End with one actionable tip.
Rule: Replace every vague word ("something", "nice", "good") with a specific one.
❌ Weak prompt
Give me some ideas for my business.
✅ Strong prompt
Give me 5 low-cost marketing ideas for a local yoga studio targeting working professionals aged 28–45 in Mumbai.
Rule: Replace every vague word ("something", "nice", "good") with a specific one.

Lesson 2: Assign a Role — The AI becomes who you tell it to be
Starting with You are a [role] is one of the most powerful prompt techniques. It primes the model to use the right vocabulary, depth, and perspective. A tax expert, a 5-year-old, a stern editor — they all respond differently.
❌ Weak prompt
Explain compound interest.
✅ Strong prompt
You are a friendly financial advisor. Explain compound interest to a 22-year-old who just got their first job, using a relatable real-world example. Keep it under 150 words.
Rule: Start every serious prompt with "You are a [specific expert]."
❌ Weak prompt
Review my email.
✅ Strong prompt
You are a strict but fair senior editor at The Economist. Review this email for clarity, tone, and conciseness. Point out every weak phrase and suggest a replacement.
Rule: Start every serious prompt with "You are a [specific expert]."

Lesson 3: Define the Output Format — Shape the answer before it starts
If you don't specify format, the AI guesses — and usually picks the wrong one. Explicitly stating the format (bullet list, table, JSON, email, numbered steps) cuts hallucinations and saves tokens.
❌ Weak prompt
Compare iPhone and Android.
✅ Strong prompt
Compare iPhone vs Android for a business professional. Format: a 3-column markdown table with rows for: Cost, Security, Customisation, Ecosystem, Battery Life. One sentence per cell.
Rule: Always end your prompt with "Format: [exact format you want]."
❌ Weak prompt
Tell me about the top 5 project management tools.
✅ Strong prompt
List the top 5 project management tools for remote teams. Format: numbered list. Each item: Tool name (bold), one-line description, best for (italic), starting price.
Rule: Always end your prompt with "Format: [exact format you want]."

Lesson 4: Add Context — The AI only knows what you tell it
The AI has no idea who you are, what your business does, or what problem you're solving. Context is not wasted tokens — it is the difference between a generic answer and a useful one. Share your situation, audience, and goal.
❌ Weak prompt
Write a product description.
✅ Strong prompt
Context: I sell handmade organic soaps in India, targeting gifting market, avg price ₹350. Write a 60-word product description for a rose & sandalwood soap. Tone: warm, premium, gift-worthy.
Rule: Add a one-sentence Context block: "Context: [who you are, what you need, for whom]."
❌ Weak prompt
Help me write a cold email.
✅ Strong prompt
Context: I am a freelance UX designer reaching out to early-stage SaaS startups in India. Write a 5-line cold email offering a free 30-min UX audit. Tone: confident but not salesy. Subject line included.
Rule: Add a one-sentence Context block: "Context: [who you are, what you need, for whom]."

Lesson 5: Set Constraints — Tell it what NOT to do
Constraints are as powerful as instructions. Telling the AI what to avoid — length limits, forbidden words, style rules — dramatically tightens the output. Without constraints, models pad, repeat, and waffle.
❌ Weak prompt
Write a motivational quote about failure.
✅ Strong prompt
Write 3 original motivational quotes about failure and resilience. Constraints: no clichés ("fall down seven times"), no rhymes, max 20 words each, conversational tone, avoid corporate jargon.
Rule: Add a Constraints line: "Do not use: [list]. Max length: [X]. Avoid: [pattern]."
❌ Weak prompt
Give me interview tips.
✅ Strong prompt
Give 5 interview tips for a fresher applying to a tech startup. Constraints: max 2 sentences per tip, no generic advice ("dress professionally"), focus only on communication and mindset. Output as numbered list.
Rule: Add a Constraints line: "Do not use: [list]. Max length: [X]. Avoid: [pattern]."

Lesson 6: Chain of Thought — Make the AI think step by step
For complex problems, telling the AI to reason step by step before answering dramatically improves accuracy. This is called Chain of Thought prompting. It is why adding "Think step by step" to a math or logic problem gives better results.
❌ Weak prompt
Should I quit my job to start a business?
✅ Strong prompt
I have 6 years of corporate experience, ₹8L savings, a validated product idea with 3 paying beta users, and a family with one child. Should I quit my job to go full-time? Think step by step: list pros, list cons, assess financial runway, then give a clear recommendation.
Rule: For complex tasks, add "Think step by step" or "Reason through this before answering."
❌ Weak prompt
How do I price my freelance services?
✅ Strong prompt
I am a freelance graphic designer in Bangalore with 4 years of experience. My current rate is ₹500/hour but I feel underpriced. Reason step by step: calculate my market rate, factor in expenses and taxes, suggest a new hourly and project-based pricing model.
Rule: For complex tasks, add "Think step by step" or "Reason through this before answering."
